Board of Directors

Long Beach Transit is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors which provides broad policy and financial decisions, setting direction for management. The Mayor of the City of Long Beach, with the approval of the Long Beach City Council, appoints Long Beach residents to the Board to serve up to two four-year terms. In addition, two designees of the City Manager’s Office may serve as City Representatives of the Board, but do not have voting authority.

Each year in January, Board members vote to elect officers to serve as the Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary/Treasurer.

Maricela Renteria de Rivera is the Co-Founder/Director of Long Beach Breastfeeds, and formally worked as a Public Affairs Assistant for the Long Beach Airport. A graduate of Leadership Long Beach, Ms. de Rivera served on the Board of Directors, including the Executive Committee, for three years. Ms. de Rivera currently serves on the Board of Directors for BreastfeedLA.

Sumire Gant

Sumire Gant heads her own consulting practice specializing in sustainable transportation planning and public affairs. Acknowledged for her efforts to make Long Beach the Most Bicycle Friendly City in the country, Ms. Gant managed the transportation planning and programs division for the City, securing millions of dollars in grants to plan and construct innovative bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Ms. Gant holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from UCLA and a Bachelor’s of Science from the USC.

Colleen Bentley

Colleen Bentley worked in the California State University Chancellor's Office for 25 years, where she served as Public Affairs Director and special projects director. Ms. Bentley’s work included working with the Chancellor, Board of Trustees and the 23 campus presidents on media relations, communication issues and video/web projects. Ms. Bentley currently serves on the CSULB Alumni Association Board, the Leadership Long Beach Honorary Board, the Advisory Board for the Long Beach Public Library Foundation, the Community Improvement League Board and the Friends of Belmont Shore Board.

Nancy Pfeffer

Nancy Pfeffer is the Founder and President of Network Public Affairs, an environmental and transportation consulting firm based in Long Beach. Ms. Pfeffer serves as Director of Regional Planning for the Gateway Cities Council of Governments, and is a Board Member of FuturePorts and City Fabrick. Ms. Pfeffer holds a Master's degree in Public Policy from USC.

Mary Zendejas
January 2015 – December 2018
1st Term

Mary Zendejas is the Director and Founder of the DisABLED Professionals Association, the former chair of the Citizens' Advisory Commission on Disabilities, and the Director of Community Relations for Accessible Connections Exchange. A former Ms. Wheelchair California and long-time outspoken advocate for disability rights, who also served on the Mayor's Transition Team. She holds a communications degree from California State University, Long Beach.

Michael Clemson

Michael Clemson has a passion for transportation. He is an avid cyclist and Long Beach Transit rider, and he believes that one of the critical things that makes a city great is having diverse transit options, including public and active transportation. In his role as the Energy Program Manager for the California State University Office of the Chancellor, Mr. Clemson works directly to promote energy efficiency and sustainability.

Lea Eriksen

City of Long Beach

Lea Eriksen is the Assistant Finance Director for the City of Long Beach. Ms. Eriksen joined the City in February 2014 and is responsible for managing a nearly $3 billion budget. Previously, Ms. Eriksen spent 16 years with the City of Cincinnati, the last seven as the Budget Director. Ms. Eriksen graduated cum laude from Miami University and has an MBA from Xavier University.

Eric Widstrand

City of Long Beach

Eric Widstrand is the City Traffic Engineer in the Engineering Bureau of the Department of Public Works for the City of Long Beach. Mr. Widstrand is responsible for planning, organizing and overseeing the overall operation and performance of the Traffic Engineering Division. Mr. Widstrand holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is a Registered Professional Civil Engineer and Traffic Engineer in California. Mr. Widstrand currently participates in professional organizations including the Institute of Transportation Engineers and the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals.
